My kids love smoothies. I mean LOVE. Like I could probably get them to do almost anything with the promise of smoothies. To be honest, I feel almost the same way.
We try many different combinations of flavors. They really enjoy trying new ones as much as savoring old favorites. I finally broke down and tried adding spinach to smoothies. The first one I made was the brilliant green ihoped for but not quite as tasty or smooth (do you like to chew your smoothie? Me neither) as I had hoped. But I was NOT deterred. I realized that to get the flavor I like best I needed to get over the beautiful green color, at least for now. I can experiment with more combinations later.
Yesterday I decided to make a smoothie with some spinach but also a creamier, more familiar taste.
Strawberry,Banana and Spinach Smoothie
In a blender add the following (I did not exactly measure most of this, really just sort of eyeballed it then tasted, repeating until it was right):
1 cup of plain kefir (I make my own!)
1/2 cup plain greek yogurt
1 handful of spinach leaves (washed)
2 bananas
2 handfuls of strawberries (washed, stems removed)
1/4-1/3 cup real maple syrup (start with the lesser and then taste to see if you need more. It can vary depending on the sweetness of your fruit)
Blend until smooth and enjoy!
I poured into 3 glasses for my youngest girls (7 years, 5 1/2 years and almost 3) and went back to pour mine. i had barely finished pouring out my own smoothie when i began hearing that slurping sound that straws make in the bottom of an empty glass. That is officially a VERY successful smoothie!
