That’s My Kid, Not A Labradoodle

In a day and age where people are treating their dogs more and more like children, I suppose it was bound to swing the other way as well.

You guys. Our kids are not dogs. And I’m really tired of everyone rewarding, training, and incentivizing them as if they are.

After ballet they get a sucker. After soccer they get Cheetos and Capri Sun. If they do XYZ just right in school or church they get candy.

I’m over it. Really.

What if for going to ballet class you are rewarded with increased skill and confidence in your dance routine? What if for playing hard in your soccer game you learned a little more and maybe even scored or blocked a goal? What if for paying attention in class or studying you gained knowledge and learned you are capable of working hard? What if we teach our kids that the activity itself is worthy?

There are two major issues with treating Frankie like Fido:

Rewarding with food gives food a power it should not have. You run the risk of creating a dangerous relationship with food. Food is fuel for our bodies. It can be fun, delicious, and enjoyable but it should not be the reason we do everything in life. If my kid is to the point where “snack is the best part of soccer” then I’m just going to buy her a few snacks and skip the $85 fee to play soccer.

The second issue is that we are creating a generation of kids who believes every thing they do deserves a reward. Every.Single.Thing. Do you want to deal with that adult? Neither do I!
But this is exactly what they are learning. I go to the class or game (that I begged my parents to let me do) and I get a food reward. I do what I am already supposed to do at school and I get a food reward. I pee in the potty instead of on the living room floor and I get a food reward. We already have a serious issue of entitlement coming up out of high school and college right now. This next group is going to be even worse if this keeps up.

Listen, if you want to treat your dog as a child have at it. I’ll keep to myself my thoughts on the “I Love My Granddog” bumper sticker you just bought your parents.
But for the sake of these kids we’re raising to be adults and the world that must deal with them…can we PLEASE stop treating them like dogs?!

Candy Unjunked!

I was at the grocery store yesterday picking up a few random items we needed. As I walked down the coffee and tea aisle to get coffee filters I noticed a small cardboard display stand off to the side. It had candy in it but I had never seen this kind of candy before.
It is called Unreal Candy. I could see from the display that their tagline is “Candy Unjunked”. Being that I prefer natural things and avoid chemicals in our food I had to take a closer look to see just how unjunked this candy really is.
Looking at the label I found that Unreal Candy contains:
No corn syrup
No partially hydrogenated Oils
No artificial ingredients (that’s flavors or colors, people!)
No preservatives
Low glycemic index

So right now you are probably thinking, as I did, are you sure this is CANDY?? I had to purchase a few to try for myself. They have 5 products: the equivalent of plain M&Ms, the equivalent of peanut M&Ms, peanut butter cups, a candy bar like Milkyway, and a candy bar like a snickers. I chose peanut butter cups (my husband’s favorite candy) and candy coated chocolates (like M&Ms).

Hubby and I tried each kind of candy. I wanted his opinion as I tend to give healthy and natural products a bit more leeway because I WANT to like them.

Let me tell you, we both LOVED these candies. My Reese’s addicted husband actually was very happy with these PB cups and found them worthy of taking the place of his beloved candy. They were really delicious and didn’t have that fake food taste. You know, that waxy chocolate after taste, that super high sugar content (er, HFCS actually) that makes your teeth ache as you chew? None of that! And am I the only one who actually tastes the food dyes on M&Ms?? They have always been a fave candy of mine but since I cut food dyes out of our house I can actually taste them when I eat them (and they do NOT taste good, in case you were wondering).
The candy coating on the chocolates is colored with things like beet root juice and purple cabbage juice. I just think that is fabulous! And as you can see from the picture the colors are earthy and somewhat jewel-like. They’re quite pretty.
I recommend you look into Unreal Candy to see the difference for yourself. Now that I have had two of their 5 products I’m thinking I need a few more things from the store… 😉


Are you sick?

People I love are sick. They are sick and slowly killing themselves. And it breaks my heart.

My father was diagnosed with diabetes almost 14 years ago. He was severely overweight, undoubtedly obese. Honestly, that is how he was for the majority of my life. Diabetes is a scary diagnosis. It certainly isn’t what I would hope for for my father. But it changed his life in a good way. He has lost so much weight. He eats well and he walks miles (thanks quite a bit to his wife!) daily. Sure, he allows himself some treats but he doesn’t over indulge and he doesn’t have them daily. Here is the most amazing thing – he doesn’t take any medication for his diabetes! He has it controlled completely with diet and exercise. THAT is a beautiful thing.

Now back to those people I love who are sick. I love my dad and he DOES have diabetes but I don’t necessarily count him among the “sick” because of how well he takes care of himself. But there are several people who I care about greatly who have diabetes (and a few who certainly could be well on there way) and are not fighting for their lives the way they should be.
These people are taking their meds as necessary and then filling their bodies full of CRAP. Your life depends on what you put into yourself. You can only expect to get out of your body what you put in. And if you are putting crap in that is what your body is going to give you back. CRAP! (Yes, I get that no matter what you put into your body, technically you get “crap” back! hahaha)
The processed junk that passes for food today is loaded with sodium, sugar, High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS) and Hydrogenated oils. These foods are so overly “flavored” to taste even “better” to our palates. Our bodies crave more and more junk the more of it we consume. Did you know that HFCS actually tricks your body into thinking it is still hungry even when it should be sending full signals??
Soda/Pop, frozen pizza, crackers, chips, little debbies, and on and on….all of these processed foods are contributing to the ill health and slow demise of millions upon millions of people including those I care about.
So now what? Now we fight back. We stop buying the crap. Throw it out! We start visiting the farm market and making our own food. We fight for our lives and the lives of our children.
Now is the time to take food back. To make it what it once was. Real. Simple. Pure.
